Newell D. Normand was elected Sheriff of Jefferson
Parish by 91% of the voters in November of 2007. Sheriff Normand has previously
served in various command positions during his twenty nine years with the
Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office such as Chief Criminal Deputy, Comptroller,
and Chief of the Louis Armstrong Airport Law Enforcement Detachment. Prior to
joining the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, he started his law enforcement
career in the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office serving high risk
warrants and court capias.
Sheriff Normand’s formative years
spent at Jesuit
High School instilled in him the value
of education which eventually led him to receiving a Bachelors degree in
Business Administration from the University
of New Orleans, and a Juris Doctorate degree from Tulane
University. Newell is also a graduate of the
prestigious FBI
National Academy
and has completed additional coursework in Criminal Justice at the University of
Virginia and LSU Baton Rouge.
He continues to give back to his
community by serving on the boards of numerous organizations such as Volunteers
of America, East Jefferson General Hospital Board of Directors,
Jefferson Community
School, Jefferson Children’s
Advocacy Center,
ForeKids Foundation, Stuart
Hall School,
and the Boy Scouts of America.
His professional accomplishments
include work with the HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) Board of
Directors, Louisiana Asset Management Pool, Louisiana Commission on Law
Enforcement, Governors Anti-Terrorist Task Force, New Orleans Chamber, Louisiana
State Bar Association, Louisiana Sheriffs Association, Government Finance
Officers Association and many, many more.
He is married to the former Shawn M.
Bridgewater and is the proud father of John Taylor Normand and Sarah Elizabeth
Normand.
